When I think about Auntie Kathi, my heart overflows. She was the epitome of love and loyalty in my mind. She was the glue that held our family together. The complexity of her character is woven into everything that I am and do. Soup suppers on Friday night, singing our family songs, doing kind things for others just because you can, a deep appreciation for family, music, and mischief, a love for the medical field, and so much more. Even pinning my braids over my head is something I learned from you. I remember seeing your hair like that when I was a little girl and longing to be able to do my hair just the same way. The impact that she made on me is greater than I think she even knew.
I will forever cherish the memories of spending the summer with her and Grandma in the Tulip house in Loma Linda, exploring her house, finding treasures, swimming, drinking Kearns juice, eating Little Links, playing her piano, and picking the lemons and avocados in the back yard. I see her grandchildren now enjoying the very same house, making their own memories and it strikes me that a legacy like that carries on from one generation to the next. Though my children will never meet my Auntie Kathi, they will know her. They will be touched by the same generosity, love, and loyalty that she bestowed to me, my siblings, and parents.
Her legacy, like Grandma and Grandpa’s, will live on in us.
I love you with all my heart, sweet Auntie. This is not goodbye. I will see you someday soon, without the loss of one.
